A man accused of smashing an Uber vehicle with a hammer

A man has been charged with breaking the windows of an Uber vehicle with a hammer this morning in east Melbourne. Police say the man was picked up at Carlton for a planned trip to Surrey Hills before a payment dispute broke out in Blackburn just after 7.30am.

When the car entered Lalwa Street, police allege that the passenger began damaging the shared car with a hammer.

The driver, who was not injured during the incident, told police he stopped at a hardware store during the trip so the passenger could make a purchase.

A witness said the vehicle was completely destroyed.

“Everything was shattered by the side mirror and the rear windshield has a big hole,” he said.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at 1:30 p.m. today at a Canterbury Road mall in Forest Hill.

The man was charged with criminal damages, theft and driving offenses and will go to trial in October.
