A 37-year-old man pleads guilty to the second-degree murder of a single mother in Langford who was shot dead outside a meeting two years ago.
“I enter the statement voluntarily, there has been no coercion,” Anthony Singh Dheensaw said in the courtroom, which appears virtually from prison.
In Victoria, a small courtroom was filled with friends and family of Angela Dalman, who on hearing the guilty statement were gasping for relief and wiped away their tears.
The murder of the 40-year-old single mother took place outside a meeting on Friday, March 6, 2020 in Langford. After firing two shots, Dheenshaw fled the scene in a car, but was arrested by police the next morning.
“I heard two loud bangs, they were so loud that I thought they were explosions. Three women came flying out of the back of the house shouting and crying saying ‘call the police, call the police!'” Said one witness the night of the incident. “I heard one of them say they shot him.”
Dalman was taken to hospital, but later died from his injuries, leaving a teenage son behind.
“What we do know is that there was a rally that took place in this residence where this shooting took place. We are unsure of the relationship between the victim and the suspect at this time, “Const. Nancy Saggar told West Shore RCMP the day after the shooting.
As of today, Dheensaw not only pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Angela Dalman on March 6, 2020, but also pleaded guilty to using a firearm in an attempt to assassinate ‘murder of a man named Derrick Oke on that same date. Details related to this case have not been released.
But Dheensaw should never have had the weapon he used to shoot and kill Dalman, nor Oke in the first place. According to court records, he was under a lifetime ban on firearms by court order following a 2018 assault conviction in North Vancouver.
According to court records, a few days before killing Dalman, Dheensaw was also arrested for possession of drugs and weapons. These charges are still pending.
A date will be set at the end of this month for a statement of the facts, the victim’s impact statements and the sentence for Dalman’s murder.
