A man has been taken to hospital with a stomach injury after being shot by police at a Grafton property on the north coast of NSW.
NSW police said officers responded to reports of an aggravated break-in and entered at noon on Tuesday.
Police said they found a 25-year-old man who had been barricaded inside a room on the property.
Police said an officer fired his gun at the man when he allegedly confronted them with a machete.
The man was injured in the stomach and arm and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the crime scene has been established and a critical incident team from the Northern Region Police District will continue to investigate.
Police said the investigation will be subject to an independent review.
