A Kelowna driver recently shared a video of a motorcyclist crossing the lane on Glenmore Road.

The dashboard video shows traffic moving along Glenmore Rd. when the driver of the motorcycle decides to cross the traffic to go through several cars.

“This Glenmore heading south approaches Bernard Ave., the videos are timed and my speed is also shown. The speed limit here is 50km / h.”

The driver did not want to use his name, but tells Castanet that he is driving Glenmore Rd. as part of their displacement.

Lane splitting is popular and legal in some countries, but not in Canada, according to the Confederation of Motorcyclists of Canada. “Several groups continue to call on their local and provincial governments to consider legalizing lane splitting and filtering.”

The practice is used to allow drivers to avoid traffic congestion, save time and can also be safer than stopping behind parked vehicles, some motorists argue.

The video from the dashboard camera shows the motorcycle accelerating and passing between two cars that appear to be meeting the speed limit before accelerating to a traffic light.

The RCMP tells Castanet that this type of driving is not only risky for the motorist but also for other motorists.

“We are always concerned when drivers act this way and put themselves and others at risk,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Judith Bertrand.

The person who shared the video with us said, “My comments are worth no more than anyone’s, but I don’t think anyone in our community supports this kind of driving behavior.”
