A pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a street sweeper in the city of Toronto in North York on Tuesday morning.
Toronto police responded to reports of a collision in the Lawrence Avenue East and Leslie Street area shortly after 9 a.m.
Police say an 85-year-old woman was walking east through Tremont Crescent when a sweeper hit the pedestrian.
The woman was fatally wounded and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 39-year-old man, remained at the scene and was taken to hospital for evaluation.
“The driver was very distressed and as a result was taken to hospital and is currently in medical care at the moment,” Inspector Jeff Bassingthwaite told reporters at the scene.
It is unclear if the truck was clearing the street at the time of the collision.
The City of Toronto says it is “cooperating fully with the police and their investigation.”
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, as well as with our employee, at this difficult time,” a city spokesman wrote in a statement to CP24.
Police ask anyone with information or security pictures or dashboard cameras to contact them at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416 222-8477.
