Cork: Emergency services respond to incident
A woman in a car with two children has died when she sank in the River Lee in Cork last night.
The two children, who are believed to be only 10 and 11 years old, managed to escape from the vehicle and began swimming to a safe place before being rescued from the water.
They were taken to Cork University Hospital where they remain, with life-threatening injuries.
Eyewitnesses to the horrific incident say they could only see the car crashing into the river, Cork Live reported.
They said two passengers, the children, were able to get out of the car as it sank further into the water and began swimming to a safe place.

The search continued during the night of the woman, about 40 years old, who was believed to be trapped inside the vehicle when she sank at Kennedy Quay around 8.45pm on Friday.
The woman’s body was later removed from the water by the Irish Naval Services Diving Team and taken to Cork University Hospital.
The results of the autopsy will determine the course of the Guard’s investigation into the incident.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “We are investigating all the circumstances of an incident in which a vehicle entered the Lee River at Kennedy Quay, Cork City, at approximately 8:45 pm on Friday, June 3, 2022.
“Two children were recovered from the water and are currently being treated at Cork University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.”
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred at Cork Pier in recent years.
In both 2021 and 2020, similar incidents occurred where a car was found to have sunk into the water.
On both occasions a body was removed from the water.
