After recovering from the big report that leaked GTA 6 details like the location and protagonists, another source has shed some light on the early plans for the game. During Bloomberg’s report on Grand Theft Auto VI and the studio’s culture, it was mentioned that the game was meant to be bigger than any previous Rockstar title. The scale would be immense, with large areas of North and South America, but it has been scaled back. That’s all we knew about the previous iteration of GTA VI, until now.
4 players, 3 cities
According to Stephen Totilo of Axios, Rockstar Games originally planned for “four protagonists and three cities”. That’s why the game’s codename is “Project Americas.” This new information was shared with Axios Gaming by a source close to Rockstar, which adds to what Bloomberg previously mentioned.
Unfortunately, no further details have been revealed about which cities were being worked on in the early stages of development for GTA 6. However, it would be safe to speculate that Vice City would be one of those locations, as it is now the game’s main location . It’s entirely possible that the 2 main playable characters in Bloomberg’s report are also from the previous version of the game. Either way, Rockstar has halved the number of playable protagonists which many would say is a good thing. The 3-way story mode introduced in GTA V was controversial. Many liked the new version of the story mode, but many others preferred to stick with just one character.
Our take
Something that many of us GTA players have wanted for a long time is the ability to travel from one city to another, for example Los Santos to Liberty City. While it’s disappointing to hear that we no longer have 3 cities at launch, I’m optimistic based on a couple of things.
Many fans have longed for a return to the fictional setting of Miami and we are getting more of its “environments”. Bloomberg adds that the game will have more interior locations than any previous GTA game, which may give us more new experiences. They follow this up by saying that Rockstar will update the map regularly over time with seemingly new cities. So while we won’t be getting them on Day 1, we could see a return to Liberty City or somewhere completely new after launch.
Rockstar made a new island, Cayo Perico, for GTA Online in 2020. Although you can’t manually fly a plane there, there is some precedent for a new game space after GTA 6 comes out. With the help of next gen consoles, I think a new town or island will handle better and have less limitations than Cayo Perico currently has.
