CM Punk’s career as an AEW world champion has had its first hit on the road.
Just five days after becoming champion, Punk, 43, announced Friday night’s Rampage episode that he has suffered an injury that will require surgery. Punk does not give up the AEW World Championship, but in his absence will be crowned interim champion.
Punk described the injury as a broken “wheel.” He promised to come back bigger, faster, stronger and hungrier than ever.

The AEW Interim World Champion will be crowned the pay-per-view for Forbidden Door, co-sponsored by AEW and NJPW, on Sunday, June 26th.
AEW has announced that a battle royal will open Dynamite next Wednesday, with the winner advancing to face Jon Moxley in the main event of the episode. The winner of this match will face an opponent who has not yet been announced in the interim title fight in Forbidden Door.
Punk star NJPW Hiroshi Tanahashi was originally scheduled for Forbidden Door.
Seven years after leaving the WWE, Punk returned to professional wrestling when he signed with AEW last August. This is his first world championship since 2013.
