AHS reviewing EMS response time for deadly dog ​​attack in northwest Calgary

Alberta Health Services says it has begun an “immediate review” of the EMS response to a deadly dog ​​attack that occurred Sunday afternoon in northwest Calgary.

Police said the victim, an 86-year-old woman, was found on 1500 Island NW Avenue around 2 p.m.

She was attacked by three of her neighbor’s dogs and taken to hospital, but later died from her injuries.

“This is a tragic event, and our deepest condolences are to this person’s family and friends,” AHS said in a statement to Global News on Monday.

The health authority added that his team is contacting the victim’s family, not only to share condolences but also to “directly discuss the response”.

“EMS answered this call in approximately 30 minutes. This is longer than we expected and is out of our target response times.”

AHS noted that EMS was facing challenges related to an extremely high volume of calls at the time of the incident, meaning no ambulances were available immediately.

“We are grateful to the paramedics who treated the patient at the scene, as well as to the first responder partners of the Calgary Fire Department and the Calgary Police Department,” AHS said.
