Albanese hints that the Murugappan family will return to Biloela

Anthony Albanese has strongly suggested that the Murugappan family be released from custody and allowed to return home to Biloela.

Albanese foresaw an announcement coming later today from incumbent Home Secretary Jim Chalmers that would allow the family to be released from community detention in Perth.

The Murugappan family’s attempted deportation was one of the most controversial issues of the previous government.

The case had been in and out of court for years, and the immigration minister refused to intervene in his favor.

Labor promised during the campaign that if they won the election, the Murugappan family could return home to Biloela, ending a long legal battle to stay in Australia.

Labor MP Madeleine King, based at the Western Australian Brand headquarters, said the return of the family was a “priority”.

“Our commitment is for the Biloela family to return home to Biloela,” he said.

“I understand they have a community that loves them and would like them to go home.”
