Officials on the papal visit to Canada say they continue to prioritize indigenous participation in all events during the papal visit. Tickets for the events have been made available to survivors of residential / day schools, the elderly and those in charge of knowledge.
In a press release Monday morning, the First Nations Confederation of Treaty 6 said it had heard many survivors hoping to attend the events in person. Officials said they are doing their best to respond to all requests they have received about the papal visit.
“Absorption over the last two weeks has continued to increase. We have a lot of interest from people who want to attend the events that are being planned here in Edmonton,” Grand Chief George Arcand Jr. said Monday.
“This event is for survivors, people who went to residential school.”
Unfortunately, the Confederation said that the requests have overwhelmed the administration and with limited resources, it has been a challenge to deliver information to those living outside the territory of the Treaty 6.
“The Treaty 6 Confederation is trying to accommodate so many Treaty 6 people who want to be welcomed that they are survivors,” Arcand Jr. said.

He said the Confederacy has had to bring in additional people to keep up with the calls and inquiries they have been receiving.
“There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment, but we have been able to work with national organizations to try to create websites and contact people. And in fact, Maskwacis created its own site so that people can access it and contact someone. “Lac Ste. Anne has done the same,” he said.

Laryssa Waler, spokeswoman for the Papal Visitation team, said they are working with various agencies and organizations to help with the distribution of rickets to indigenous participants in Maskwacis and Lac Ste. Anne.
“The mass in the Commonwealth is open to Indigenous participants and the general public, but we are prioritizing Indigenous participation,” Waler said.
“Because the event in Maskwacis is a national event, we are also doing our best to ensure that survivors across the country can attend and we are coordinating with many organizations to ensure this happens.
“We are making every effort to accommodate survivors, the elderly, knowledge-keepers, young people and leaders who wish to attend. We are also aware that there are capacity limits in both Maskwacis and Lac Ste. Anne, and that “For many across the country, travel is difficult. That’s why we’re also investing in outreach services so that events can be accessible to everyone to see in multiple languages and dialects.”

“People, I think, assume they can just get in their vehicle and drive to any of the events. All the events have become a bit of a coordinated effort around the parking lot, making sure the issues are resolved. of security”.
“The second thing, of course, is that we’ve always done this event about the survivors: Ermineskin, Commonwealth and Lac Ste. Anna’s act. So we’ve been really instrumental in working with the people of Ermineskin / Maskwacis and working with the Lac Ste. Anne to ensure that survivors who want to attend can be a part of that. “
Arcand Jr. said they do not yet have established figures on how many people will attend the events in Maskwacis and Lac Ste. Anne. Expect to have more details by the end of the week. At the end of the day, he said there are a number of people who work very hard to make the Pope’s visit to Alberta a success.
“We’re fighting, but it’s a good fight. It’s a good event. Obviously the visiting Pope and coming here to talk to the survivors is something we’ve been promoting. We know some people aren’t happy with the Pope’s visit, but “We know a lot of people do. And that’s how we’re working with all those people who still want to be part of the event.”
