Early medical checks show Alexander Zverev broke “several lateral ligaments” in his right foot during his French Open semi-final with Rafael Nadal on Friday.

The German athlete has put on crutches on social media to inform fans of his horror injury, after undergoing an initial medical examination that showed multiple ligament tears.

Zverev, who came out of the track in a wheelchair in tears at Roland Garros, posted on Instagram: “Hello guys! I’m on my way home now. According to the first medical check-ups, it looks like I’ve broken several lateral ligaments of the right foot “.

“On Monday I will fly to Germany for more exams and determine the best and fastest way to recover.”

The world number three, who was aiming for his first French Open championship, hit his ankle in his semi-final against Nadal as he tried to hit a right hand from the corner of the Philippe Chatrier track.

Zverev was subsequently forced to retire and the Spanish veteran – a thirteen-time winner in Paris – advanced by default to reserve a place in Sunday’s final against Casper Ruud.

After the match, the 25-year-old posted a video message on Twitter to describe the injury as “very serious”.

He said during Friday’s message: “It’s a very difficult time for me today on the track.

“It looks like I have a very serious injury. But the medical team and the doctors are still checking it out.”
