An Alberta couple discovers a dinosaur bone on a new property

An Alberta couple discovered a large dinosaur bone while hiking on their new property near Edmonton.

The Sedlaks bought the 150-acre land in Leduc County last winter. This spring they began to explore their forests and steep ravines. On one of their walks, they came across a small stream and under an eroded cliff they made the discovery of a lifetime.

“When we got to this area, my friend Casey said,‘ I’m sure we found a dinosaur bone, ’” Brenda Sedlak told CTV News from the scene. “It can be said that it comes from something huge.”

They sent photos to experts at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta. Days later, a paleontologist returned to them and confirmed that they had found a fossilized dinosaur bone.

“They said they’d like to go out and have a look,” Sedlak said.

Alberta is one of the richest sources of dinosaur fossils in the world, with sites such as Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Royal Tyrrell Museum attracting a steady stream of visitors. Sedlaks are waiting for paleontologists to visit them to confirm what kind of dinosaur they came from and find out what to do with them.

“Looking at the picture, it looks like a limb bone starting to come out of the rock,” University of Alberta paleontologist Mark Powers told CTV News.

Powers believe the bone could be even one of the largest predators that have ever walked the earth.

“Given the size and kind of hollow nucleus that seemed to be there, it certainly seemed more likely to be a tyrannosaurus or something,” Powers said.

Whatever the Cretaceous’s curiosity, the Sedlaks want to make sure they find their way from the bed of their property’s stream to a museum.

“Technically it’s part of the story,” Brenda Sedlak said. “If we can contribute to that, we will be happy to do so.”

So today, as part of my actual job, I went down a ravine to check out a fossilized dinosaur bone that someone found on his property. A paleontologist says it may actually be part of a tyrannosaurus femur. That was great. pic.twitter.com/eQWSUGnw1l
