An elderly driver released over the death of a young boy “run over” in Sunshine North

A 73-year-old woman who turned herself in to police after a fatal crash in west Melbourne has been released.

The woman was arrested Friday morning and interviewed by detectives before being released pending further investigation, Victoria police said in a statement.

Earlier, relatives of the late three-year-old boy Ethan Nguyen gathered at the scene to pay their respects.

Police believe the boy ran to McIntyre Rd in Sunshine North after separating from his mother around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

He was hit by a red sedan and dragged up to 30 meters, according to police. The driver could not be stopped.

The boy was seriously injured and taken to hospital, where he died overnight.

The red sedan has been towed by a truck and will be tested forensically.

The boy’s mother is out of pain, Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said.

“Losing a child as beautiful as this will be devastating and (the family) will be like that for a while,” he said.

Relatives wept on the street and placed a photo of the child on a tree near the crash site, along with flowers and other tributes on Friday.
