There has never been much love for John Barilaro in the federal national ballroom.
That was even before he and Federal Rep. Llew O’Brien split up in an attempt to escalate an argument between the two.
O’Brien’s 2017 tweet that Barilaro, who had called for then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to resign, should “focus on his role as a reserve-grade deputy captain and let the older boys and girls deal with federal affairs “- he had not done. been well received.
Barilaro has never lacked an opinion on federal issues.
That’s why it’s hard for you to find someone in the party room who privately thinks it was a good idea to nominate him for a $ 500,000 concert in New York.
“What are his qualifications? He’s a carpenter,” one of them said this week.
Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to search, up and down arrows for volume.
Barilaro’s saga of becoming New South Wales ’trade commissioner has drowned out his former state government’s bid to sell a budget it hopes will be re-elected in March.
Whether or not Barilaro ever arrives in New York will be a matter for the chief bureaucrat, who is reviewing the recruitment.
However, the appointment also serves to remind the new federal government about the dangers of appointments and positions.
‘Fine for the boys’
If there’s one thing Joe Public hates, it’s the idea of “jobs for boys”. Even worse is any perception, real or not, that politicians have their snout in the trough.
An additional thorn in the side of progressives is to stomach conservative politicians who denounce the big government and the public sector in general while in government, only to find themselves in publicly funded jobs in their post-political careers.
Former Treasurer Joe Hockey is one example.
In government, he argued that the age of law should end, before delivering a tight and ultimately politically toxic budget.
He regularly promoted the virtues of the private sector, only to find himself on the public stock market after leaving politics.
As a result, in Donald Trump’s America, the cheeky, gregarious ambassador Hockey probably gave Australia his best chance to get the attention of the president of the United States.
It’s not that the appointments of former politicians are all meant for criticism. In some cases, they attract bipartisan support.
The new Labor government has made it clear that it supports former Liberal Prime Minister of New South Wales Barry O’Farrell to remain as Australia’s High Commissioner to India.

Giving a charge to a former politician abroad can often open doors for a career diplomat who would otherwise have difficulty accessing it, think hockey playing golf with Trump.
However, there is the issue of Barilaro, another Conservative who has spoken fondly of the need for a small government, and the question of why is a state government paying someone $ 500,000 to live in a city like New York, where your costs and accommodation will also be covered.
“That’s why we have AusTrade,” one federal national argued.
Former New South Wales Prime Minister and Federal Secretary of State Bob Carr has echoed that sentiment.
“Brand Australia” fractured
The job Barilaro is looking for is one of five jobs he created when he was Minister of Commerce.
New South Wales is not the only one to publish its own people overseas, but there are conflicting reports on what roles they can achieve.
In some cases, state localism has been shown to confuse export markets, and some in the industry argue that promoting the “Australia brand” is likely to be more successful than boosting individual states.
Federal Labor does not have to wait for the state review of Barilaro’s hiring to find out how it will appoint people for the posts.

The federal election told us people are paying attention to politics and not too excited about “business as always.”
In New South Wales, voters are seeing a lot of money, as few, if any, are willing to take responsibility for Barilaro’s appointment.
Whether or not any crime has occurred in this state, and the CBA does not suggest that there has been one, reinforces the need for federal work to provide the federal ICAC it has promised.
Voters have made it clear that they want transparency and accountability in decision-making.
One politician called the appointment something that is done after an election, not before.
Labor will imminently announce a new high commissioner in London and most expect him to be a former politician.
Who, someone guesses. The only guarantee is that he will not be the man who bears the nickname Barra.
