At least one GameStop location is practically giving away copies of BioWare’s abandoned loot shooter, Anthem, as shown in a now viral TikTok.
According to TikTok user clocklava, a recent visit to his local GameStop resulted in the discovery of a PlayStation 4 copy of Hymn for the low, low price of a single penny. Better yet, a GameStop employee “paid” that penny for this lucky customer, resulting in a free copy of Anthem. (Note, there is vulgar language in the video below.)
The third-person shooter full of BioWare exo costumes, Anthem, was not understood exactly when it was released in 2019, which probably explains why the game is practically being given away at this particular GameStop. For some context, I worked at GameStop for about three years, and GameStop often “takes advantage” of items that are unlikely to be sold to remove products from inventory. This often happens with old strategic guides, t-shirts, and other products from a store that may have too much, but will likely never be removed. Then these “amortized” items are usually marked and thrown in the trash, or more commonly, GameStop employees take them home.
Actually, the GameStop employee who gave clocklava a copy of Hymn was basically giving away a game destined for the container, and the sad reality is that the employee might have trouble giving away a game that was not designated by for sale. . Fortunately, the location of this GameStop or the employee in question is not revealed in the clocklava video, so it can only be expected that there will be no negative repercussions for anyone involved.
It’s worth mentioning that GameStop.com currently sells digital codes for Anthem for up to $ 60. In particular, GameStop does not include any second-hand copies of Anthem for sale on its website, which means that all physical copies of Anthem may have already been delivered at some point. About a year after the release of Anthem, BioWare announced that it would seek to redesign and relaunch the game, which it announced as Anthem NEXT. BioWare and EA disconnected the project in 2021, after spending more than a year working on ideas on how to redesign the shooter, citing the impact of COVID-19 on production and the need to “focus the laser” on new projects in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. Although Anthem does not receive any new updates, the game’s servers will remain online for the time being.
