Albanese and Ardern were asked about calls by Pacific nations to take further action on climate change and whether additional emissions cuts or foreign aid are planned.
Albanese says Australia has presented a $ 200 million fund for infrastructure investment and climate change, “in addition to the $ 525 million of additional support for development aid in the Pacific.”
“Some of that will also have implications for acting on climate change because part of development assistance is helping our friends in the Pacific Islands make the transition, to have access to clean, sustainable energy, also for them.
“I think our change of position will be very well received in the Pacific.”
Ms Ardern says New Zealand will continue to support its neighbors “for mitigation predominantly, but where they seek it, adaptation”.
“We’ve had a bit of an advantage having been in government for a few years, but we want to continue to improve our game in the region and that’s what the Pacific are looking for.”
