Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment is working on a new one-player game. The game seems to be related to Apex Legends, Respawn’s popular free multiplayer battle royale.
Little is known about the game at this early stage and it probably won’t move forward until the development of Respawn’s upcoming Jedi Fallen Order sequel is complete. It doesn’t seem like a sequel, either to Apex Legends or Titanfall 2. Someone will sit up straight in front of the words “Respawn” and “a player,” but withdraws: even though Apex is canonically set on Titanfall, nor is it thought to be Titanfall 3.
The game’s existence was revealed through a job posting on Respawn’s website, which called for a senior systems and engine engineer with C ++ skills. The selected candidate will supervise the engineering of the Apex Universe projects.
Apex Legends has become EA’s most popular new IP since its surprise launch in 2019. Its development was a bit of a passion project internally. It arose from the now familiar approach of the studio’s initial design, which is to split into smaller teams and prototype large ideas. A Titanfall camp with PUBG-based battle royale mechanics was the most popular candidate. Apex Legends became Respawn’s first live service game. It was also the game that popularized a widespread non-verbal communication system, Ping.
Contrary to Respawn’s concern that Titanfall fans would think that EA had forced them to make a BR title, according to reports, EA’s brass was reluctant about the entire project. “Not to throw EA under the bus, but this wasn’t the game they were expecting,” executive producer Drew McCoy told Game Informer at the time. “I had to go to the executives, teach them and explain it and … just convince, ‘Hey, trust us! That’s what you want from us.'”
The “gut feeling” that guided the development of the game occurred. The popularity of Apex Legends exceeded all expectations and instantly became EA’s new most recognizable IP in years. That Respawn plans to take advantage of his characters and the small pocket of the Titanfall world they inhabit should come as no surprise.
While it may not be Titanfall 3 (and keep the faith, true believers, we’ll get there someday), I think Respawn has gained a bit of confidence in this one.
