Apple unveiled a new version of macOS at its World Developers Conference. The new operating system, macOS Ventura, includes a new Stage Manager organization tool and Spotlight updates.
Enabled from the Control Center, the utility will automatically organize your open applications next to the screen as you center the one you’re working on. Users can also drag icons from the desktop to marginalized application icons for quick import.
Spotlight also includes new updates – you can now find images in the photo library and find text within images and remove shortcuts. Spotlight has also been added to the bottom of the iOS home screen.
Mail Search has been tweaked, such as fuller previews, instant suggestions, and spelling corrections. Safari has a new tab-sharing feature, which allows users to see which tabs their friends are viewing in real time, and now supports biometric “password keys” as replacements for traditional passwords across multiple supported platforms. (Apple, Google and Microsoft pledged earlier this month to support password-free sign-in on all of their mobile, desktop and browser platforms).
The operating system also offers users the ability to “deliver” FaceTime calls between iPhones and Macs, allowing users to effectively use the iPhone’s (probably much better) camera as a webcam instead of their Apple computer. The continuity camera includes support for the center stage and Apple portrait mode.
Apple also announced Metal 3, which “will unleash the full potential of Apple Silicon over the next few years,” according to the conference.
Apple has long been aiming to bring macOS closer to its mobile counterparts, a process that this update continues. Recent releases of macOS have brought the basic features of iOS (including Focus and Shortcuts) as well as the design elements of its icons, windows, and menus to the Mac. This review will presumably continue to universalize the experience of Apple enthusiasts across all devices, especially along with new continuity-focused features such as universal control.
