Apple confirmed today that the iPad will no longer be able to be used as a home device after the release of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura and HomePod 16 software this fall.
As revealed in the code OSiOS 16 by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, Apple says that the iPad will no longer be compatible as a home device. This information will be displayed in the Home app after upgrading to iOS 16.
A home hub is needed to take advantage of features such as receiving accessory notifications and allowing others to control your home. You won’t be able to see shared homes until those homes are also updated in the latest HomeKit. The iPad will no longer be supported as a home device.
With Apple no longer supporting the iPad as a home hub, users will need to have a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV to take advantage of hub-enabled features, such as remotely accessing accessories with Siri and using location-based automation. .
Apple’s iOS 16 preview website suggested that the iPad could not be used as a home hub, but so far it hasn’t been confirmed because in the first beta of the iPad 16, it was still possible to set up an iPad as a domestic concentrator. “Only ‘Apple TV’ and HomePod are supported as home centers,” says the website.
The wording of the code in the second beta of iOS 16 suggests that Apple is removing the functionality of the iPad’s home hub. The company has not explained why the iPad will no longer function as a home, but could be related to the upcoming implementation of Apple’s cross-platform Matter smart home.
At the end of the year, Matter will allow HomeKit users to add more smart home accessories to their HomeKit settings.
