The first beta of iOS 16 is here and Apple has left a treasure trove of information in its code, including what is expected to be a major update to the iPhone 14.
Discovered by 9to5Mac, iOS 16 contains “multiple references that confirm that iOS 16 actually includes support for an ever-active screen.” This is a feature that Apple decided to leave out the official release of iOS 16 and, explaining its omission, something that Mark Gurman of Bloomberg recently stated that it will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Breaking down his discovery, 9to5Mac explains:
“Within iOS 16, three new frameworks related to iPhone screen backlight management have been added. Backlight management is a key aspect in enabling an ever-active feature. of these frames includes references to an always active screen. capability “.
The site notes that references should not be confused with the ever-active display that already exists on the Apple Watch and is specific to iOS components, including the lock screen.
“In addition, and above all, there are several references to an always active screen within the Springboard, which is what manages the lock screen (and home screen) of the iPhone. Apple Watch does not use Springboard,” he concludes .
Interestingly, 9to5Mac points out that there are flags hidden within the beta code of iOS 16 that allow the feature to be activated on devices not supported for testing. Should this give hope to owners of old iPhones? I wouldn’t be so sure.
First of all, while the iPhone 13 Pro models have screens with a variable refresh rate of 10 to 120 Hz, the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro gets lowered to 1 Hz making a screen always on be more efficient on this device. Second, if it came to existing iPhone models, Apple would surely have announced it, especially when it talked about improvements to the lock screen as one of the most important improvements in iOS 16.

In addition, Apple has a long history of including code in next-generation versions of iOS that filters information about upcoming products and accessories. The beta code for iOS 12 included the iconography of the iPhone XS Max, iOS 13 leaked the iPhone SE2 and Apple CarKey, iOS 14 leaked the iPhone 12 Mini and iOS 15 leaked MacBooks again generation.
Consequently, as long as the feature reaches the final release of iOS 16, I think we just saw the first example of aggressive differentiation of the iPhone 14 that Apple is expected to follow. It doesn’t matter the cost.
