Apple is expected to unveil the next-generation MacBook Air at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2022, but it won’t arrive in the wide color gamut indicated earlier; you may not be able to get your hands on it any time soon. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the upcoming MacBook Air will suffer from a supply shortage due to COVID-19 closures in China. Blockages of COVID-19 in China have been a problem for companies, as they caused the temporary closure of factories, delaying production. The Cupertino giant has several manufacturing partners in and around Shanghai, including Pegatron and Quanta. The Chinese government has begun easing restrictions, but the blockade remains in place in parts of Shanghai, causing problems in these manufacturing units. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will ship between 6 and 7 million units of MacBook Air this year if Shanghai’s Quanta plan can return to pre-lock production capacity before the third quarter. In addition, Kuo says shipments for the upcoming MacBook Air would be better than existing 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Quanta was the sole supplier of the MacBook Pro, while Quanta and Foxconn would ship the MacBook Air with the M2 engine. Kuo says the MacBook Air will come in two new colors: dark blue and champagne gold, in addition to the existing space gray and silver. It is rumored that the new MacBook Air will come with the basic chip of the second generation M series, called M2. In addition, it would have a 13-inch screen, two USB-C ports and a MagSafe charging port. Gurman also expects it to come with a notch and a design similar to the Pro models.
