Apple’s CarPlay goes beyond the infotainment screen

Apple announced a full CarPlay upgrade to better connect to a car’s dashboard and deep integration with the vehicle itself. CarPlay users will be able to change what they see on the dashboard with a widget design very similar to Apple.

Users can add travel information, monitor the car’s weather, view the weather, view up-to-date navigation information, fuel and battery levels, and more. It can be adapted to different screen sizes and has a completely new interface reminiscent of having an iPad on the center screen.

Apple says there will be more announcements by the end of next year. Apple has been working internally on a self-driving electric vehicle, but the company continues to receive setbacks and executive departures. This new CarPlay integration is the closest we’ve seen to what an Apple Car might look like.

Manufacturers are already looking to integrate the next generation of CarPlay, such as Ford, Audi, Jaguar-Land Rover, Nissan, Volvo, Polestar and more. Apple says 98 percent of all new cars already have CarPlay, and 79 percent of users consider this feature before buying a car.
