Armed home invaders arrested after violent fight with police

Two home invaders armed with pistols and knives clashed with police officers as they tried to escape the scene of a violent robbery.

Merseyside police were called to an address in Birkenhead in the early hours of June 29, 2021 following reports of two men attempting to forcibly enter a property with firearms and knives. The caller and his partner had fled to a second-floor balcony while the two men were about to walk through the front door.

PCs Charlotte Grisenthwaite and Rosie O’Sullivan arrived at the communal flats minutes after the call where they confronted the two gunmen wearing balaclavas and trying to escape. A violent fight ensued as the two officers pulled out their batons and tried to stop the armed thieves.

Two other officers, Sergeant Nicola Hughes and Sergeant Thomas Jurgis, also arrived and forced their way in to help their fellow officers. The four officers disarmed the two men after a fierce fight. Numerous lethal weapons were found in the possession of the assailants.

The two home invaders were arrested and charged with various offenses. Both pleaded guilty to Crown Court and received sentences of 18 and 12 months in juvenile delinquency institutions.

The four officers will now join colleagues from England and Wales at the National Police Bravery Awards in London next month. The awards honor officers who have performed outstanding acts of bravery during or out of service.
