Harper: “People are confused”

Analyst and commentator Andy Harper is another baffled by Tony Gustavsson’s approach to these two friendlies, featuring youngsters against Spain and Portugal and resting some of Australia’s best players.

“People are confused and wonder why certain things happen,” Harper told Ten. “When to rest? When to play with people and when youngsters of blood against a white team like Spain? As the caravan moves forward, as we win a draw against Portugal … that [7-0 loss against Spain] it’s going to sit for a while “.

“It’s not known what the plan really is”

Former Matildas Thea Slatyer is unconvinced after the Matildas draw with Portugal, especially in terms of the team’s preparations for the 2023 World Cup. Under the direction of Tony Gustavsson, the team has lacked cohesion. and consistency of players

“We still don’t know what the plan really is,” he told Network Ten. “Hopefully now we have a little more consistency and less player exchange.”

It echoes the thoughts of many who have not yet seen a visible style of play, consistent tactics that have undermined performances and results.

Full time: Portugal lose another chance to steal the lead

Portugal turned down another chance to get the lead with the last shot of the match when Encarnacao shot directly into Lydia Williams’ arms with all the goal to score.

It leaves the Matildas with a part of the booty in the tie 1-1 against Portugal. Australia will regret an offside in this goal, but perhaps he was luckier throughout the match. They should have received an expelled player, but were saved by an identity error, while Portugal missed about four clear chances to score.

It was a big improvement over the 7-0 defeat to Spain, but it was still a poor performance against a team ranked 18 places below.

Portugal hit the post

A minute after scoring, Encarnacao almost put Portugal ahead. A volley to the far post shoots at the post after beating Lydia Williams in the Matildas goal.

A nervous ending for Matilda.

Goal! Portugal level tie

Well, you can’t say they didn’t deserve it. Portugal tied with just four minutes to go. A poor rotation on defense was punished with precision. The cut of Carolina Mendes to Telma Encarnacao, who has not been wrong from very close, fitting into the corner of the net.

The replays showed an offside clue that the VAR would have picked up if it were in use. C

Portugal falls apart

Ibini’s goal against the streak of the game seems to have exhausted the energy of the Portuguese. The locals had total control of the game during the first half and should have advanced with a burst of good chances but their waste was punished by Matildas’ substitute.

Portugal’s draw hopes have become more hopeful than built with more long-range shots than anything created.

The Matildas have just six minutes more time off to endure a rare victory in Europe.

Another look at Australia’s goal

Another look at Princess Ibini’s goal.

Ibini brand!

Substitute Princess Ibini has completely broken the stalemate against the duration of the game. A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased the lead of Emily Gielnik to 2 – 0 as Ibini finished it off competently, firing in from an acute angle.

A well-worked and perhaps very cruel counterattack with the Portuguese.

73 ‘min: Australia advances 1-0.

Australia riding its luck

The Matildes are lucky to have 11 on the field and not to have given away a penalty. Courtney Nevin commits a foul on Tatiana Pinto just outside the penalty area, but the referee correctly detected that the contact was outside the area. What the referee lost, however, was that it was Nevin who made the contact. Nevin was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent’s quick free kick after 80 minutes.

Luckily for Australia, the free kick was thrown very far from the goal.
