Four separate earthquakes were recorded near the port city of Bandar-e Lengeh in the south, including one that recorded a magnitude of 6.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center also recorded a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in southern Iran.
Twelve villages in Hormozgan province were damaged, FARS reported.
Most of the damage occurred in the village of Sayehkhosh, where many houses were destroyed, Iranian state media IRNA reported, citing local officials.
Five villages lost electricity due to the earthquakes, officials said.
“Currently, 75 rescue operatives and emergency crews are present in the areas affected by the earthquake with the use of 12 operational vehicles,” the Iranian Red Crescent said on Twitter.
The quake could be felt in the UAE, according to reports on the ground by CNN staff.
Other affected countries include Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and Afghanistan, according to the USGS.
The area is known for its seismic activity and the USGS included in its update that the “earthquake sequence” reported over the past few hours is “relatively common.”
At least one person was killed after a series of earthquakes shook southern Iran last November.
