Attorney General David Eby is running to become the next BC prime minister

He is inside.

After weeks of speculation, BC Attorney General David Eby is due to formally announce this evening that he is running to become the next BC NDP leader.

Eby, the race favorite, would become prime minister if he wins the leadership race or is the only candidate to run in the race before the October deadline.

The 44-year-old announced his intention to join the race in front of colleagues and supporters of the caucus on Tuesday evening in Kitsilano, part of his Vancouver-Point Gray circuit.

Eby says 48 MPs support his bid to lead the party and replace Prime Minister John Horgan.

“I think I can offer consistency and certainty at a very inconsistent time,” Eby said.

“If I’m successful, British Colombians shouldn’t expect any radical change from what John is doing. But if I’m successful, I definitely see some opportunities to meet the needs in fast-growing communities. Around housing. “around the essential infrastructures. Around rewarding those cities that are approving what we need.”

In recent weeks, nearly a dozen potential candidates have turned down the opportunity to face Eby.

Eby is one of the province’s best-known politicians and recently helped reform the ICBC, launched a public investigation into money laundering in the province, and leads the province’s response to the ongoing housing crisis.

He says he would like to see other people join the race as well.

“It is a democratic party. If anyone can get the signatures, they can run, my team is getting ready for a race, ”Eby said.

Over the weekend, the BC NDP announced leadership rules to replace Prime Minister John Horgan.

Horgan announced in June that he would not seek re-election and would resign as prime minister as soon as NPD members voted for a leader to replace him.

On Monday, Horgan and his government celebrated five years in power. A cancer diagnosis and recovery, in part, led Horgan to decide to move away from the prime minister’s chair.

The deadline to join the party and have the right to vote for the leadership is Sunday, September 4th.

The final list of candidates will be available on October 4th. If no other candidate stands against Eby, the party could decide not to hold a final vote.

Eby would then become a leader and could be sworn in in November.

If there are several candidates or the party decides to keep the current schedules, voting will begin on Sunday, November 13, and the new leader will be announced on Saturday, December 3.

If the second option occurs, the new NDP leader is expected to be sworn in as prime minister in mid-December, following a brief transition after the leadership race.

“It is good that the party from the beginning shows this unity, but there is also a cathartic to air some of these concerns. Because not doing so generates some of these resentments, “UBC political scientist Gerald Baier said.
