Averillo scores two while the Bulldogs get a big win over the Wests Tigers

Canterbury have secured consecutive wins in a season for the first time since 2019 after a 36-12 win over the Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

A double to Jake Averillo set the score as the Bulldogs backed up last week’s thrilling effort against the Eels to produce five tries turned into victory.

NSW Origin hopefuls Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr were at their best in front of Blues coach Brad Fittler, while Averillo’s form since moving to the sidelines continues to rise under interim coach Mick Potter.

The Bulldogs held a 12-6 lead at halftime before Potter’s men unleashed four tries in 18 minutes to establish a comfortable 30-point lead.

Fifteen days after Michael Maguire’s departure, the Wests Tigers showed no resistance in the result with injuries to Alex Twal (header) and Starford To’a (ankle) aggravating the defeat.

Adam Doueihi’s return from a knee injury was a positive of a disappointing day for the Wests Tigers, who now have a 15-day break to assess their season before the final home run.

Bulldogs make sparks to stun tigers

Snapshot of the match

  • The Wests Tigers suffered an early blow to the game with Alex Twal leaving the field for a head injury assessment – which failed – just two minutes after the game.
  • Bulldogs hooker Jeremy Marshall-King hit the Bulldogs on the board in the 14th minute with his fourth attempt of the season.
  • Wests Tigers came close to extending their lead as David Nofoaluma delivered a low effort on goal from the right after 80 minutes, but the angle was too narrow and the shot went harmlessly into the side netting.
  • A double to Jake Averillo before and after the break broke the deadlock to establish a 12-point lead.
  • The points kept flowing when Jacob Kiraz hit the line for the third attempt of his NRL career.
  • Bulldog debutant Kurtis Morrin, who backed the club as a child, had a dream start to his career, scoring 12 minutes after his first game with an Addo-Carr pass.
  • An interception attempt by Aaron Schoupp, who ran 90 yards to the line, added more points for the Bulldogs and helped them record their biggest win of the season.
  • Morrin’s afternoon ended prematurely with a shoulder injury that forced him to leave the field at the end of the game.
  • Wests Tigers skipper James Tamou crossed at the end of the game to flatter the scoreboard.
  • Canterbury enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 83 percent of possession.

Game play

It was a special moment for Kurtis Morrin, nephew of former NRL player Brad Morrin, with a second-half effort to end a pass from Josh Addo-Carr just one of the many highlights of a fun afternoon for the Bulldogs.

Try Kurtis Morrin’s debut

What they said

“The players are working really hard to improve our attack and every week they come up with something a little different and it’s nice to see. They’re probably the same players, I think they’ve noticed there’s more and they want to play a little bit. a little more and I think they’re expanding and trying a few things and it’s working for us. to lead for ourselves, but winning only solves a lot of problems and makes everyone feel very good at the club. ” – Michael Potter, Bulldogs interim coach.

“We certainly have to stay together. It’s a difficult time for the club right now. As I told the men, I thought we made a reasonable effort, but trying in this competition sometimes doesn’t allow you to be good enough. the best and having a crack brings you to the competition, but you have to be able to add more and do it better and longer than the opposition in some respect. Fifty, fifty. If we can, we have to learn to be a very tough and defensive team. ” – Brett Kimmorley, Wests Tigers interim coach.
