Pinkfong, the company behind “Baby Shark”, also known as the song with the most viewed video on YouTube, has announced an NFT project entitled “Baby Shark: Collection No. 2”. The NFTs in the collection, 10,000, will include the generative art of the titular shark baby and the rest of its shark family. Generative NFTs are like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, where there are a variety of random traits in a collection.
When I first heard this news, I had two thoughts at once (using my entire daily assignment):
- Please tell me they are not trying to sell NFT to children
i
So yeah, it looks like this is going to be NFT’s second set with Brooklyn (TIL, that’s the name of the shark baby) and his family. The first was announced late last year and, according to Pinkfong, sold out immediately. I am sorry to inform you that people have spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars on these NFTs, even though the initial sale took place in December 2021. This was, according to the NonFungible market monitoring, shortly before the NFT market is starting to fall. Unfortunately, this probably means that there are some Baby Shark bag holders.
As for whether Pinkfong is trying to get kids interested in this … I’m not really sure where I end up in this. His roadmap (which, of course, includes the development of “Baby Shark’s Footprint and the Universe in the Metaverse”) seems well-written for investors and adults alike. However, it’s also based on knowing and caring about “Baby Shark” characters and wanting to be part of the community. That’s not something I see as true for most adults, though I guess I could always be wrong about that.
What’s definitely not for kids is the “Baby Shark” party at NFT.NYC that Pinkfong will use to celebrate its second round of NFT. The company describes the event as a “fantastic night of entertainment, music and networking,” and let me tell you; I’m absolutely dying to know what kind of networking is done at a “Baby Shark” NFT party. Am I curious enough to support NFT.NYC to find out? Well, unfortunately, I’m too busy doing absolutely anything else that day (plus, you know, I wasn’t invited for some reason). But if you end up going, send me an email to tell me how it went.
If you missed our Baby Shark party in Austin, don’t worry, we’ll be getting bigger in New York next week!
Our party, Baby Shark Nite @ The Nolcha Shows: NFT Edition, will take place next Monday 20/6 during https://t.co/tEgGxaSihf.
This event is by invitation only, so send us a DM for more information! 🙂 pic.twitter.com/xXRXHL99A9

I would definitely not say that this invitation seems to be aimed at children.
When it comes to this, you won’t hear any judgments from me about the adults who personally decide to buy the NFT “Baby Shark” stroller when this collection comes out later this year. (Not because I don’t judge people for buying NFT, but because I usually do it quietly.) But the Pinkfong website says the company is trying to “define the early moments of childhood.” Parents, please do not define the first moments of your children with speculative assets.
