The Backone One is getting a new look.
This morning, Backbone (the company behind the Backbone One, a really cool controller accessory for the iPhone) debuted a new variant of their device: the Backbone One PlayStation Edition.
The idea behind the Backbone, for those unfamiliar: Grab the Backbone, slide your iPhone (or, soon, Android device) into its expanding grip, and bam: proper gaming on the go, buttons and all. Check out Matthew Panzarino’s review of Backbone One here.
Internally, this PlayStation Edition is largely the same as the original Backbone One: it has the same switches, triggers, design, etc. On the outside, though, it’s been redesigned (in collaboration with the PlayStation design team) to look right next to a PS5. or official DualSense driver.
Here’s what else you need to know:
- The company will sell both devices; the original Backbone One is not going away
- This version of the controller is identified as a PlayStation controller for the OS, allowing compatible mobile games to use the appropriate PlayStation glyphs (Triangle, Circle, etc.) instead of ABXY in their menus/tutorials/etc.
- As with the original Backbone One, it will cost $100.
- It will start shipping today
While it would be easy to write this one off as “Oh, it’s the Backbone One but white,” it’s a pretty big stamp of approval for a relatively young startup like Backbone to be able to release a PlayStation edition, even. on the hidden PS logo on the expandable back.
