Badial’s boss killed his wife with a machete before setting himself on fire in a suicide bombing, the investigation said

The head of a well-known Birmingham supermarket killed his wife before he was set on fire in a suicide bombing, according to an investigation. Sewa Singh Badial, 87, who ran the Badial department store on Soho Road in Handsworth, repeatedly hit his wife Sukhjit, 73, with a machete in the living room of his home in his Coventry home. .

He then entered the garden and sat in an open pit. Mr. Badial, who was wearing his blood-stained clothes, was filmed by CCTV spilling liquid before turning it on. Their bodies were found on June 29, 2021.

An investigation into his deaths in Coventry forensic court found that “in a living room chair was a farewell note written by the deceased describing an argument with his wife.”

Delroy Henry, a forensic expert in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, concluded that Mr Badial had committed suicide while his wife had been illegally murdered.

At the hearing recording, Ms Badial said the deceased had “suffered a series of injuries to her upper body and limbs which were described as defensive actions to remove a blade instrument”.

A large hook (a garden machete) was found on her body, along with a wrench, which was also used to hit her in the face, according to the investigation.

Ms Badial died of head and face injuries while the cause of her husband’s death was the effects of the fire, the coroner said. Hundreds of people flocked to social media to express their sadness when his death was announced and to offer their condolences and prayers for the couple.

The couple had four children and seven grandchildren. A statement from his family said they were “supporters of good causes and committed members of the local Midlands community”.
