Berlin crashes – one dead and at least eight injured after car crashes into crowd

The incident took place near Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist ties, hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then drove him to a crowded Christmas market.

The December 2016 attack killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

The country has seen several incidents in which vehicles collided with large groups of people.

During the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, a German man crashed his car into a crowd to watch a match at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, injuring about 20 people. The driver was later admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

In April 2018, a German crashed his van into people sitting outside a restaurant in the city of Münster, killing five before being shot dead. Investigators later said he had mental health problems.
