President Biden said Sunday that his administration is considering declaring a public health emergency in access to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month.
“Keep protesting. Keep protesting your point. It’s very important. We can do a lot to accommodate women’s rights,” the president said while riding a bike in Delaware, noting that his staff is exploring whether it has “authority” to declare a health emergency and “what impact it would have”.

The president’s comments come after Jen Klein, executive director of the White House’s Gender Policy Council, appeared to throw cold water at the idea of a public health emergency related to access to abortion earlier in the week. .
“When we looked at the public health emergency, we learned a couple of things. One is that it doesn’t release a lot of resources. It’s what’s in a public health emergency fund, and there’s very little money, dozens of “It didn’t seem like a great option. And it also doesn’t release a significant amount of legal authority,” Klein told a White House news conference on Friday.

The president signed an executive order on Friday that expands access to abortion drugs and offers protections to women traveling across state borders to have an abortion.

Still, the president’s own party has called for more urgent action, such as ending the Senate obstruction, setting up federally owned abortion clinics, and packing up the Supreme Court.

“My ultimate goal is to reinstate Roe v. Wade as national law by passing it by the U.S. Congress, and I will sign it by the time this happens,” Biden told reporters Sunday.
