“President Joe Biden’s symptoms continue to improve significantly” after his COVID-19 infection last week, the president’s doctor said in a written update Sunday.

Biden completed his third full day of Paxlovid, an antiviral drug that helps reduce the chance of serious illness, on Saturday night, President Kevin O’Connor’s doctor said.

“His predominant symptom now is a sore throat,” O’Connor said. “This is likely a result of lymphoid activation as her body clears the virus, and is therefore encouraging. Her rhinorrhea, cough and body aches have decreased considerably.”

O’Connor said that while the president’s voice remains “a little deep,” Biden’s pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature remain normal and he has no difficulty breathing. Biden’s oxygen saturation remains “excellent” on room air, according to the doctor, and his lungs remain clear.

“The president continues to tolerate the treatment well,” O’Connor said, adding that Biden will continue to take Paxlovid as planned while he remains in isolation.

“As I said earlier, the BA.5 variant is particularly transmissible and will continue to be isolated in accordance with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” O’Connor said. “We will continue to monitor him closely, during this very common outpatient treatment regimen.”

Biden tested positive for coronavirus Thursday morning. O’Connor said Saturday that the president likely became infected with a highly contagious variant, known as BA.5, that is spreading across the country, and Dr. Ashish Jha, the country’s COVID-19 response coordinator the White House said on Sunday: “It is the BA.5 variant.”

This variant is an offshoot of the omicron strain that emerged late last year. It is believed to be responsible for the vast majority of coronavirus cases in the country. Since then he has isolated himself in the White House residence.
