Bison horned woman in Yellowstone National Park

An Ohio woman was bitten by a bison after approaching the animal while visiting Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, park officials said Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was visiting the national park from Grove City, Ohio, about 20 minutes outside of Columbus.

Park officials say the woman, whose name has not been released, fell less than 10 feet from the bison’s female on a nearby boardwalk. Then the animal horned her and threw her 10 feet into the air.

She was treated by park medical emergency personnel at the scene and then taken to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center by ambulance with a stab wound and other injuries.

Two more people were 25 feet from the same bison, but it is unclear if they were injured.

Bison, which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, have injured more people than any other animal in Yellowstone, according to park officials. Visitors are asked to stay at least 25 meters from all major wildlife, including sheep, deer and elk, and 100 meters from bears and wolves.

Bison are known to be unpredictable animals that can charge at any time and can run up to 35 miles per hour, but this is the first incident reported this year of a bison horning an individual.

This article was amended on June 1, 2022 to clarify that the health status of women is not yet clear.
