It’s been 15 years since Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson started talking about playing DC Comics character Black Adam, and it’s all led to that. Today, Rock is finally a superhero, or at least a person with superpowers. Because in the first trailer for Black Adam, you’ll realize that this isn’t your typical superhero movie.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam is scheduled to premiere on October 21, and in this first teaser trailer, you’ll meet the same man in black and a bunch of other heroes. They are members of the Justice Society of America, which includes Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintess Swindell) and Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan). “There are a couple of things we wanted to convey [with that trailer]”Producer Hiram Garcia told io9 at a recent press conference.” One, the movie is funny. The movie is great. Second, I think when you see Black Adam, you realize we’re honoring the comic book version of Black Adam. He doesn’t punch. He can be a judge, a juror and an executioner. And his approach to doing things is very different from what typical heroes would do. “
This leads to why this film, the origin story of this ultra-powerful antihero, features the Justice Society of America. “When Black Adam arrives, when a person with that level of power arrives on the scene, it’s the kind of thing that makes the whole planet stand out,” Garcia said. “So naturally there will be people investigating the arrival of someone like that. And that’s the kind of energy that unites these two. It’s a threat and they’re not used to having someone like that, which is a living cable, so powerful and therefore a team has to go and investigate. “
Fans will notice, though, that despite hearing about the origins of Black Adam, his family, and the fact that he kills people, we don’t learn much about the story of the film itself. Garcia said it was very purposeful. “It’s a joke,” he said. “You have a little bit of his motivation. You feel what happened to him and he finally drove it. But the idea was that this is a little more of a teaser. And as more things come out, you’ll get a little more of the history “.
Black Adam hits theaters on October 21 and we will soon have more information from the man himself, Dwayne Johnson, about how this film will begin a new era in the DC universe.
