A man’s body has been found on the Essex coast two miles from where a 21-year-old went missing at sea on Tuesday.
Five people were pulled from the water near Clacton Pier and taken to hospital on Britain’s hottest day on record, but one man remains missing. The search was reduced after more than 24 hours.
Essex Police said emergency services searching for the missing man had found the body of a man in Jaywick on Saturday morning, but he had not yet been formally identified. They said they were trying to contact the 21-year-old’s family.
“Emergency services involved in the search for a man who was last seen in the water near Clacton Pier have this morning located the body of a man in Jaywick,” police said Essex in a statement.
“A large-scale search was launched after six people were reported to be in distress in the water near Clacton Pier shortly before 11am on Tuesday 19 July.

“Fortunately, five people were brought to shore, but one man, aged 21, was unaccounted for. Formal identification of the body has not yet taken place.
“As the competent authority, we are in contact with international partners to contact the family of the 21-year-old man.”
On Wednesday, police said they were trying to contact the family of a 21-year-old man who was being treated as missing.
The alarm was raised when six people were reported to be in trouble near the jetty on Tuesday.
The East of England Ambulance Service said four men and a woman were assessed before being taken to Colchester Hospital, which said they had been discharged.
