Boris Johnson in Ukraine’s pact with Macron

Boris Johnson and President Macron have agreed to hold an Anglo-French summit to improve ties after pledging to help Ukraine make a military “rise” against Russia.

The relationship between the two men has been strained, but yesterday the prime minister jokingly referred to it as “le bromance” and said they were “100 per cent aligned”. Although Britain has already questioned France’s commitment to Ukraine, during a bilateral meeting at the G7 summit yesterday the couple agreed that Russia’s direct defeat remained the best result.

If that failed, Macron said they had to put President Zelensky in the best position to reach an agreement. Johnson was said to be effusive after leaving the meeting because Macron’s firm line over Ukraine overtook the British.
