Devin Haney was ready to take a step back and fly to Australia to fight George Kambosos Jr. for the undisputed lightweight championship Saturday night. This turned out to be a very profitable decision for Haney, as he dominated Kambosos in 12 rounds to win the four world championships with 135 pounds.
Haney becomes only the ninth fighter to unify the four recognized titles in any weight category and the second youngest at just 23 years old.
There was very little drama in the fight, with Haney immediately setting up a brilliant shot that prevented Kambosos from ever starting his offensive. When the jab landed, Haney fired left lead hooks and right hands straight behind him, each shot discouraging Kambosos from letting go with his right hand that seemed to have been loaded all night.
In the end, Haney got the win by unanimous decision with the official scorecards with 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110.
“I hurt him in his best game,” Haney said after the fight. “I wanted to land my right hand and the big left hook. I disabled him. He was fighting in both directions. When he went to the left he was fighting his right hand. When he was going to the right, he was fighting his hook. He couldn’t land none of them.
Haney entered the CMB champion while Kambosos was the champion of the CMB franchise along with the AMB, IBF and OMB world titles. Now, Haney is leaving with all the gold and a bright future ahead.
