Destiny 2 won’t be bringing any more of its expansions, Bungie confirmed at its showcase event today. Sunsetting was Destiny 2’s term for the removal of some of its content, including weapons and expansions.
The sunset began with the release of Beyond Light in 2020. The move implemented an infusion cap on weapons and armor, which are only available for use up to a power level (low) . Likewise, some of Destiny 2’s areas (such as Mercury, Mars, Io, and Titan, which housed old content) were moved to what Bungie calls the Destiny Content Vault, meaning they were removed from live play.
The last (and final) zone to set the sun was Tangled Shore, removed along with the Forsaken campaign. With the possibility of the sunset on the Dreaming City and the Shadowkeep campaign, Bungie’s confirmation that it would not want any more expansions caused some fans to breathe a sigh of relief.
The removal of the Forsaken campaign means that fans can no longer experience one of Destiny 2’s biggest campaigns, a long-standing complaint from parts of the fanbase since the introduction of Sunset. The removal of older content means that players no longer have access to important parts of the story, such as the Red War campaign, and the lack of sunset aims to make the Light vs. Dark is accessible to players. The Shadowkeep campaign, the next chronologically on the cutting block, is integral to understanding the darkness and events from Shadowkeep to the upcoming Lightfall expansion. Keeping this campaign in the game will help keep this story intact.
As a side effect, this also means that players don’t have to worry about destinations using expansions, although it’s unclear what this might mean for other planets and locations that have no use in campaigns like Nessus and the ‘EDZ.
The showcase also revealed details about the upcoming Lightfall expansion, which is scheduled for February 28, 2023. The expansion will introduce a new destination: the cyberpunk-inspired Neomuna, as well as the Strand power, which will take shape as subclass and details about the upcoming story.
