Police say a shooting in the Edmonds neighborhood that sent a 19-year-old to the hospital on Friday night was “targeted,” but not related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.
Police are investigating a shooting in Burnaby that sent a 19-year-old man to the hospital on Friday night with life-threatening injuries.
Burnaby RCMP received a report of a possible shooting in the area of 19th Avenue and Humphries Avenue around 11:20 p.m., according to a press release.
At the scene, officers located a 19-year-old man with what police believe was a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Police say the victim is not cooperating with his investigation.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.
According to the statement, witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored vehicle leaving the area before police arrived.
Shortly afterwards, a similar vehicle caught fire in North Burnaby, according to the statement.
The Burnaby Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire at 9000 Ashgrove Cres. around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to Deputy Chief of Fire Gavin Summers.
Teams found a “fully involved car on the side of the road,” he told NOW.
After extinguishing the fire, he said firefighters left the burning car in charge of the Burnaby RCMP as it had been considered a “vehicle suspected of the crime in the early hours of the night”.
“Everything has gone to the RCMP,” Summer said.
Police investigators do not believe the incident is related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict, but they did describe it as “targeted”.
“This kind of event can be terrifying for everyone,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the statement. “However, we do not believe that this targeted attack poses any further danger to the public.”
Anyone with a video camera script in the 19th Avenue and Humphries Avenue area between 11pm and midnight should call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
