Call for free flu shots in Victoria to tackle backward child vaccination rate

Free flu vaccinations could be implemented in Victoria as flu infections increase and put more pressure on the state’s health care system. The push reflects Queensland’s approach, which promised free flu shots for those over the age of six.

It comes as new research shows that 27 percent of Victorian parents cannot afford the cost of a vaccine.

Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said today that the government is in “deep talks” with the Pharmacy Guild and the Australian Medical Association about the possibility of free flu vaccination.

“We are working on this issue,” he said.

“One has just started school this year and our little one is in daycare, everyone has COVID-19, flu or gastrointestinal, so it’s very important,” he said.

“It’s pretty scary, like the prospect of having COVID-19 and the flu at the same time.”

A new study by pediatricians has confirmed that not all parents are on the same page.

“We have found that only half of Australian children are likely to be vaccinated against the flu this year,” said Dr. Anthea Rhodes, director of the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Children’s Health Survey.

The RCH study found that cost can also be a barrier to getting vaccinated, with one in three families worried about spending.

Nearly 12,000 flu cases have already been reported in Victoria this year, but vaccination is only about 12% for children under five.

Rhodes said the flu vaccine was the most effective way to protect children from the flu.

“First, it will reduce the chance of getting the flu and also reduce the chance of getting a serious illness,” he said.

“Times are tough. Gasoline prices are rising, food prices are rising and families are struggling.

“Freeing the flu vaccine would almost certainly make a difference in absorption rates.”
