Cameron Norrie reaches the Wimbledon quarterfinals after defeating Tommy Paul

Britain’s number one Cameron Norrie reaches the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after beating 30th seed Tommy Paul in consecutive sets.

Norrie defeated the American 6-4 7-5 and 6-4 in a victory he later considered “pretty crazy.”

His victory made him only the fifth overall Briton to reach the round of 16 of the championships and the first since two-time champion Andy Murray in 2017.

“Doing the quarters for the first time, in front of my family and my college friends is so special,” Norrie said on the track amid loud shouts from the crowd.

“In a huge game, playing like I did, it was really good. To run it all. I really liked it. It’s crazy, I have a lot of feelings.”

The ninth seed had overtaken another American, Steve Johnson, in the third round and relied on that with another good performance Sunday afternoon on track 1.

His victory comes hours after his teammate Heather Watson crashed out of Wimbledon after losing to Jule Niemeier in his fourth-round match.

The British number four lost in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4, to the 22-year-old German.

Previously, he had defeated Niemeier in his only previous meeting, earlier this season in Monterrey, in a final tiebreaker of seven.

But it was Watson’s first set shot that hit the net in frustration after a volley failed to get the set point.

It was Watson’s best performance in any Grand Slam, but a place in the quarterfinals turned out to be beyond the 30-year-old.

Watson had dropped to 121st place in the world rankings and this year marked his 12th Wimbledon.

Until now he had played every day of the tournament.
