Canada’s health care system “is collapsing around us,” warns the CMA president

Tension applied to Canada’s health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic shows no sign of abating, and now the head of the Medical Association of Canada warns that the problems could get worse.

“What is clear is the collapse of the current health care system,” CMA President Dr. Katharine Smart told CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Tuesday. “We are not seeing the political will to take it seriously.”

Smart warns that “system-wide pressure” is disastrous, with a growing surgical queue, constant challenges with primary care and emergency rooms flooded by the growing accumulation of patients.

“There doesn’t really seem to be any solutions in the short term, which is really worrying.”
