Max Verstappen passed the two Canadian GP training sessions on Friday
Max Verstappen sealed a Canadian GP training double when he overtook Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in Friday’s second session.
The world championship leader appeared supreme as he led the Second Practice from start to finish at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, recording a 1: 14.127 to beat Leclerc by almost a tenth of a second.
Leclerc, who is expected to incur a 10-place penalty on the grid for Sunday’s race amid speculation that he will opt for a new engine part, was the only driver able to approach Verstappen, with his Ferrari teammate Carlos Saiz more than a tenth behind in third.
After pushing Verstappen hard in recent weeks, Sergio Pérez on this occasion was no match for his Red Bull teammate, more than a second behind the Dutchman, who was 11th.
Lewis Hamilton also struggled once again, with the seven-time world champion describing his Mercedes as “unthinkable” as he finished 13th, while his teammate George Russell was seventh.
Taking advantage of the fights of Pérez and Mercedes were the former world champions Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, who impressed by occupying the fourth for Aston Martin and the fifth for Alpine, respectively.
