The announcements come a day after the CanMNT friendly against Panama at BC Place in Vancouver was canceled when the team refused to play due to a compensation dispute. The team had also refused to train the previous two days.
On Sunday evening, the CanMNT issued a lengthy statement via Twitter, calling for several changes to the current agreement, including changes in the direction of the governing body, a “complete package of friends and family” for the This fall’s World Cup in Qatar and 40 percent of the World Cup. Prize in cup money.
The players also called for the development of a national women’s league and a fair compensation scheme for CanMNT and CanWNT.
But the senior women’s team rejected the idea and noted that while they appreciated the discussion and saw the men’s proposal as a “positive step”, they did not consider FIFA’s equal percentages to be equal pay.
“The women’s team will not accept an agreement that does not offer equal pay,” the statement said.
Canada Soccer President Nick Bontis held a press conference in Vancouver on Sunday night in which he described the players’ demands as financially unviable.
“My job as president is a responsibility to the fiduciary and stable health of this organization, not only for the last 120 years we have been alive, but for the next 100 years we will be alive,” Bontis said. “And I can’t accept this offer that will put our organization in a financial position that is unsustainable.”
Canada is still scheduled for a CONCACAF Nations League match on Thursday in Vancouver against Curacao. Should the team not play this match, it will be subject to a FIFA fine.
