A captain of a reserve group working with Air cadets faces nine charges, including gun sexual assault and sexual interference, according to Ottawa police.
Adrian Schmid, 47, was charged Tuesday with an investigation into sexual assault that police say occurred between January 2020 and June 2022.
The alleged crimes were committed against two children under the age of 16 at the man’s home in rural Richmond, Ottawa, police said.
Police say Schmid was a captain in the Cadet Organization Administration and Training Service (COATS), a branch of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves that worked with Air cadets in Ottawa.
He met one of the victims through the program, police said.
“Once the Ottawa Police Service informed us of the arrest and investigation, the member was immediately advised to discontinue all activities of the Cadet Program and contact the cadets,” said Daniel Le Bouthillier, Chief of relations with the media of the Department of National Defense and the Armed Forces of Canada.
“Additional administrative steps are being taken with respect to this member.”
Schmid started the program in 2003 and worked with COATS for about 19 years, according to Le Bouthillier.
Le Bouthillier said all adults in direct contact with cadets have a high standard of conduct and are required to undergo a police background check and a vulnerable sector check every five years.
Schmid is charged with two counts of sexual interference, two counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual intercourse, sexual assault with a weapon and making sexually explicit material available to a person under the age of 16 years.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
