Car sales down 11.5%

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says Canadian car sales were down 11.5% in June compared to a year earlier, as supply challenges persist.
The consultancy estimates that 143,773 new light vehicles were sold during the month, with the lowest sales in June since the 2009 recession year.
Total sales are a significant drop from 162,500 sold last year, while in 2018 more than 200,000 vehicles were sold per month.
Andrew King, managing partner of DesRosiers, says in the report that “vehicle shortages remain severe and dominate the market environment.”
Supply challenges, largely linked to the shortage of semiconductor chips created by the pandemic, continue to limit the rebound in sales.
DesRosiers says the season-adjusted annual sales rate for June was 1.45 million units, slightly more than the 1.36 million units in May.
