The public health official warns that carfentanil has been detected in Hay River.

Carfentanil is known to be one of the most toxic opioids in the world and could take multiple doses of naloxone to reverse its effects.

Public health says carfentanil “can cause an immediate and unexpected overdose” in drug users, even those with high tolerance.

“The detection of this drug in the NWT is very worrying for all communities,” says Dr. Kami Kandola, director of public health.

Public health advises residents who believe someone is overdosing to call an ambulance or local health center.

Symptoms of an overdose include: • Breathing will be slow or absent • Lips and nails are blue • The person is not moving • The person is drowning • Sounds of gurgling or snoring • Severe drowsiness • No the person can be awakened; or • The skin feels cold and damp.

Residents who call to prevent an overdose are protected by the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act from possession charges.

If someone suspects that another person is overdosing, public health recommends administering a naloxone kit if possible.

“Naloxone is not known to cause any harm in the event of a non-opioid overdose. Carfentanil overdoses may require repeated doses of naloxone,” the warning says.
