The NWT public health official issued a warning Friday when the territory confirmed that carfentanil, a highly toxic substance, had been found in Hay River.
The Department of Health and Human Services said carfentanil is “one of the most toxic opioids known,” referring to research that suggests it is 100 times more toxic than fentanyl.
The department said it is necessary to alert the public of the presence of the substance in drugs in the territory.

“Carfentanil and other related synthetic compounds are extremely toxic and can cause an immediate and unexpected overdose, even in frequent users who have high levels of drug tolerance,” the warning says.
“Even small amounts can lead to overdose and death. People who use substances can never be sure if the illicit drugs they buy contain these substances.”
Dr Kami Kandola, head of public health at NWT, said carfentanil detection was “very worrying for all communities”.
If you suspect an overdose, call an ambulance or your local health center. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects you if you call to report an overdose while in possession of drugs.

Naloxone Opioid Investment Kits are available at all NWT hospitals, health centers, and pharmacies. Carfentanil overdoses may require more than one dose of naloxone.
